EVOQUE™ Pre-Composite Polymer Technology is a unique technology that offers improvements in titanium dioxide (TiO2) hiding efficiency and paint film barrier properties through the development of an engineered polymer-pigment composite. During the paint-making process, the pre-composite polymer combines with TiO2 to form a polymer-pigment composite which improves both the wet and dry hiding efficiency of the pigment. The hiding improvement gives formulators the option of either using less TiO2 or increasing the hiding in their formulations. In addition, barrier performance properties of the film are maintained or improved. Formulations can be developed which emphasize the performance improvements at similar cost or maintain performance at reduced cost while taking advantage of the increase in TiO2 hiding efficiency. EVOQUE Pre-Composite Polymer Technology works with most TiO2 slurry and dry grades and is compatible with other binder technologies. In addition, this technology works well with ROPAQUE™ Opaque Polymers, offering an additive effect for improved hiding efficiency and reduced dependence on TiO2. EVOQUE™ 1242 Polymer is a 100% acrylic pre-composite polymer emulsion, offering the benefit of pre-composite polymer technology. DOWICIL QK-20 Antimicrobial (The Ideal Biocide for clean-up of Microbially Contaminated Mineral Slurries):
The presence of microbial contamination in mineral slurries (e.g. kaolin, calcium carbonate, ground calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide, etc.) presents a series of problems for the manufacturers of these materials. The mineral slurry often provides an excellent environment for microbes to flourish and the contamination is often difficult to control with one or two biocides alone, due to microbial tolerance issues. The problem is further compounded by the fact that most mineral slurries end up in paper coatings and hence, the biocide used will require FDA clearance for indirect food contact applications. The slurries are also often produced under highly alkaline conditions, therefore further limiting the available biocides that are chemically stable or efficacious under these conditions. DOWICIL* QK-20 Antimicrobial addresses a number of critical performance needs for today’s mineral slurry producers:
DOWICIL QK-20 Antimicrobial addresses the following needs of the mineral slurry producer:
DOWICIL QK-20 Antimicrobial (The Ideal Biocide to Enhance Preservative Performance):
Paint manufacturers are constantly alert for potential improvements to managing microbial contamination. Bacteria can be introduced into a formulation from contaminated raw materials, inadequately cleaned equipment, or a dirty water supply at any point during the production process. Once DOWICIL* QK-20 Antimicrobial has been used to clean up a raw material or a formulation, the reduced bioburden may alleviate some of the stress placed on an in-can preservative. Additionally, DOWICIL QK-20 Antimicrobial has shown the ability to enhance efficacy profiles of several commonly used in-can preservatives. Some of the more common in-can preservatives have been looked at in combination with a generic paint formulation to determine the effectiveness of DOWICIL QK-20 Antimicrobial as a preservative enhancer.
DOWICIL QK-20 Antimicrobial as a Preservative Enhancer:
A generic latex paint formulation was treated with several in-can preservatives, either alone or in combination with DOWICIL QK-20 Antimicrobial. Preservatives tested included 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one or CMIT/MIT (1.5% active), 1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one or BIT (19.3% active), and 4, 4-dimethyloxazolidine or DMO (78% active). The preserved generic latex paint formulation was then inoculated with a concentrated cocktail consisting of nine bacteria at a final concentration of approximately 109 CFU/mL. Samples were incubated at 30°C and read after 2, 4, 7, 24, 48 hours/ 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. Serial dilutions were done in broth to determine the most probable number of bacteria remaining, and log reductions were determined. The activity of CMIT/MIT, BIT, and DMO was enhanced when used in combination with DOWICIL QK-20 Antimicrobial (Note: all preservative concentrations are given as product and have not been adjusted to account for the concentration of the active). When DOWICIL QK-20 Antimicrobial was used to enhance the performance of CMIT/MIT, the level of in-can preservation was decreased from 1700 ppm to 425 ppm with the addition of 125 ppm of DOWICIL QK-20 Antimicrobial. Similarly, a minimum concentration of 1500 ppm of BIT was necessary when the preservative was used alone but, when used in combination with 250 ppm DOWICIL QK-20 Antimicrobial, a concentration of only 375 ppm was required to maintain the 5.5 log kill for 28 days. DMO was effective at a minimum concentration of 1250 ppm, but when combined with 125 ppm of DOWICIL QK-20 Antimicrobial, only 80 ppm was required to maintain the 7 log kill for 28 days. In all three cases, the use of DOWICIL QK-20 Antimicrobial as a co-preservative resulted in comparable efficacy with considerably lower concentrations of the primary preservative.

ROCIMA 346 Biocide is a liquid preparation of 4,5-dichloro-2-n-octyl- 4-isothiazolin-3-one. ROCIMA 346 is an effective biocide for the use in solvent-based paints and coatings which are applied on wood or on mineral surfaces. ROCIMA 346 shows a very broad and balanced spectrum of activity against mould and algae in the field of application. ROCIMA 346 is therefore suitable to be used as the sole protective agent. It can also be combined with other fungicides or algicides to improve their spectrum of activity. If, due to faulty construction, the surfaces to be coated are permanently damp, remedial work must be performed to correct this (e.g. with ROCIMA 103), before a successful application of microbicides can be achieved.
• ROCIMA™ 363 (Algicidal and fungicidal preparation for coatings and plasters):
ROCIMA™ 363 is a dry film preservative for use in plasters, paints and wood coatings where permanent dry film protection is required on external surfaces subjected to severe weathering and on internal surfaces where high humidity is encountered. ROCIMA™ 363 is a fluid, pumpable dispersion of active ingredients which is easy to handle, meter and incorporate into aqueous based systems and which provides a very broad spectrum of activity against fungi and algae. ROCIMA™ 363 is primarily designed for use in water based systems, however it can be incorporated into solvent based systems where it is compatible with the final product and packaging.
ROCIMA™ 363 is particularly suited to provide, at an optimised cost performance, algicidal and fungicidal protection to the coated exterior surfaces of buildings, which are subjected to severe weathering conditions. Such surfaces are often covered with dirt consisting of airborne particles of substances like soot from industry and internal combustion engines, soil and fertiliser from agriculture, pollen and other airborne debris. This dirt serves as substrate for micro-organisms which have relatively modest demands. ROCIMA™ 363 has two modes of action to protect plasters and paints. Firstly, it prevents the plaster or paint from serving as the substrate for contaminating micro-organisms. Secondly, when the surface becomes wet through rain or condensation the controlled diffusion of the active ingredients into the wet phase occurs preventing the growth of micro-organisms on the dirty surface layer. If structural defects lead to permanent dampness, the defects must be corrected before a successful application of anti-microbial coating can take place. ROCIMA™ 363 must be blended homogeneously with the product to be protected. It is recommended that ROCIMA™ 363 is added at the beginning of the manufacturing process.
